Native speakers say “kuchiguse” often to mean ‘favorite phrase’ in Japanese. Definition and meanings of “kuchiguse”

Let me start with the definition and meanings of “kuchiguse”.

  • kuchiguse – 口癖 (くちぐせ) : a noun meaning ‘favorite phrase’, ‘favorite word’, ‘habit of saying’, or such in Japanese. This can also work as plural. Learn more about Japanese plural.

  • 口 : a kanji character widely used to mean ‘mouth’ in Japanese.
  • 癖 : a kanji character often used to mean ‘habit’ in Japanese.

These two kanji characters tell us that “kuchiguse” literally means a ‘mouth habit’ in Japanese. This literal interpretation is not completely in line with the actual meanings, but still very close, I think. Favorite phrases are often what people say regularly and repeatedly.

Example #2: another usage of “kuchiguse”

I have a habit of saying sorry.

Below are the new words used in the example sentence.

  • boku – 僕 (ぼく) : a pronoun meaning ‘I’ in Japanese. This is used mainly by boys and young males. In the example, this works together with the case particle, “no”, to mean ‘my’ in Japanese.
  • gomen – ごめん : a phrase meaning ‘sorry’ or such in Japanese.
